Target Audience Research

Target Audience Research

We decided to compose a survey to get feedback on what would be a good idea for our music video and to get the correct target audience age. However, nobody answered our survey and this was therefore unsuccessful for research. We decided that as we were both interested in the artist, and many of our friends agreed at sixth form, that young adults and teenagers were most likely to be interested in the music video.

Artist Research

Artist

After researching the genre of alternative rock, we both decided to look at the artists which we enjoyed listening to, and decide on one particular artist together which is Lana Del Rey. She is a current artist in this genre, and her music is successful as there are not many female alternative rock artists producing music these days, which allows her to stand out and gain success in the music industry.

Record Label and Successes

  Music Video

I have already analysed two music videos, however they were in the pop music genre, and therefore were different to the alternative rock videos which we aim to create. Therefore, I think it is important that I chose a music video of Lana Del Rey to analyse, so that I am able to understand the style of the artist and how her music relates to the videos.

Genre Research

Genre

Me and Laura-Jo came up with 6 genres that we were interested in, and produced a mind map to demonstrate the ideas of artists that we may possibly want to research and use one of their tracks.

We were both unsure of which genre we wanted to research, so by creating this mind map together, it allowed us to analyse which artists we liked best, and we watched a few of their music videos, to see which style of video we liked most. This helped us decide that we liked the idea of using the alternative rock genre as we were both fans of it, and were interested in the videos which represented the genre.

We created a power point to display the research we have carried out on the genre which we have chosen to look into. This research has given us a clearer understanding of the genre and will allow us to make sure that our video continues to fit into the genre.

Magazine Advertisement Research Analysis

Magazine Advertisements

I didn't choose the genres strategically, I looked through Q magazine and found 3 different music advertisements which stood out to me. The main genre for these is indie rock and blues.

I created this slideshow on Kizoa

A power point I created and uploaded to slide share

Digipak Research Analysis

Digipaks

This a voice over video which I created to analyse a 'Clubbers guide to festivals' digipak. The genre of this digipak is dance and club music, I wanted to analyse a different genre from the pop music videos I looked at.

This is my slide share on the Arctic Monkeys digipak. The genre of this digipak is indie rock, which is a genre which I enjoy listening to, therefore wanted to research into further.

This is a prezi I created for Example and DJ Wire's digipak
This is a collaboration digipak of two dance and club genre artists, and I thought it was interesting to see how imagery and text would change when shared between two different artists.

Music Video Research Analysis

Music Video Research

At this moment of my research, I am not sure of the genre of which I am wanting my music video, digipak and magazine advert to be based on. Therefore I am going to analyse different genres in order for me to make my decision. As this is individual research, I will also have to take into consideration who I will work with and whether we share the same interest in the genre we want to use.

Music Videos

I created this video by using the website 'http://studio.stupeflix.com/en/' and uploaded it to YouTube to share it on my blog. I have analysed the music video 'We can't stop' by Miley Cyrus and looked at the Camerawork, editing, sound and misc-en-scene and the impression that they give. After researching different theorists and their theories on music videos, I have also compared the theories to this video on a separate power point. The genre of this song and artist is pop, and I found that Miley Cyrus has taken a modern approach on her video as usually pop music videos are viewed by a younger audience and aspects of the video are slightly crude.

I created this video using Windows Movie Maker and analysed a Katy Perry 'Roar' lyric video, however as there was no official video I assumed this was it after watching it on a music channel on TV. I love the unique style of the video and therefore continued to analyse it. This genre is also pop music, however I chose to analyse this particular video as it is unique from anything I have seen before and it instantly interested me and possibly other members of the audience watching that channel.

Purpose Of A Music Video

The purpose

As a class we watched music videos, and created individual brainstorms of what we thought music videos were produced for, and how they benefit different groups of people such as record labels and audiences. This has improved my understanding, as some of the ideas such as creating sub-cultures, are things I never associated with music videos.

Analysis - what have you learnt from this process?

I have taken more notice in the amount of shots used throughout a short amount of video and appreciated the detail in each of the shots and how they have clearly been planned out and thought about well. I have also learnt that a video can be successful without over the top misc-en scene as this video is quite basic, yet has a lasting effect on the audience as the shots create a unique and quirky video which is enjoyable to watch. Mid shots were the most common shots in this video and there wasn't a huge variety of advanced shots proving that a good video can be produced using basic shots in an effective way. I have also learnt that transitions are not always required to change between shots as this video looks great without any in between shots and it looks professional still.
